PEÑABLANCA, Cagayan, July 16 (PIA) – – The Commission on Population and Development (POPCOM) region 2 has encouraged couples who belong to the Indigenous Peoples (IPs) sector to embrace and practice family planning.

During the family planning information and service delivery caravan held in the IP community here, Regional Director Herita Macarubbo discussed to more than 80 couples and individuals, who belong to the Ibanag and Aeta tribes at barangay Agugaddan, the benefits of practicing family planning methods.

Parts of the activity include the discussion on fertility awareness, responsible parenthood, importance of family planning and the different family planning methods.

“We give priority to teenage parents who would like to avail of any modern family planning method to avoid repeated pregnancy, as well as to the Indigenous Peoples couples,” Macarubbo said.

She said despite the consistently higher contraceptive prevalence rate of the region in the previous years, there is still 14.4 percent unmet need for family planning among women of reproductive ages based on the 2017 National Demographic and Health Survey.

The commission also aims to increase further the current contraceptive prevalence rate of the region which is 57 percent, translating to more women of reproductive ages availing of the family planning services and commodities through informed choice and volunteerism.

Macarubbo also said that PopCom is commitment to undertake more efforts to reach every man and woman in the region to bring the family planning programs of the government right at the doorsteps of their clients.

“This year’s World Population Day targets the marginalized, vulnerable and disadvantaged sector of the population because we want to ensure that no one is left behind when it comes to provision of family planning information and services of the government.

On her part, Ma. Christina Taguinod, president of the Association of Barangay Captains, urged every couple to be responsible in planning for their family, in determining the number of children they should raise to live convenient lives.

“It is the responsibility of the parents to provide for the basic needs of their children. You should not rely on the assistance doled-out by the government. That is why you need to practice family planning so you can give all the needs of your family,” Taguinod said who represented Mayor Washington Taguinod in the program.

The participants also took opportunity of the event to consult with the municipal health officers and population workers their desired family planning method to adapt.

Some clients who wanted to avail of methods requiring the expertise of a trained service provider like implant, intrauterine (IUD) and bilateral tubal ligation (BTL) were advised to visit the rural health unit. (OTB/PIA-Cagayan)
