SANTIAGO CITY, Isabela, July 15 (PIA) – –  The Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) in this region initially presented 11 units of taxi, eight jeepneys and three buses as compliant vehicles during the launching of the Public Utility Vehicle Modernization Program (PUVMP) here on July 11.

Regional Director Edward L. Cabase said the launching of the PUVMP is in support to the Department of Transportation’s goal of modernizing all PUVs by 2020 enabling efficient and environment-friendly public transport systems in the Cagayan Valley Region.

Cabase said the program aims to call for the phasing-out of jeepneys, buses and other public utility vehicles that are at least 15 years old and replacing them with safer, more comfortable, and reliable transport alternatives over the next three years.

“The PUVM program also aims to change the current franchising system, revise and introduce new routes, and provide trainings to the drivers,” Cabase said.

Aside from the units presented during the launching, Cabase said the number of units will increase gradually.

He added that PUVMP will also be launched in Cauayan City and in Tuguegarao City. As to the dates of launching, Cabase said it will be announced soon.

The Robinsons Place of Santiago and the other identified places for launching, according to Cabase, will serve as the parking areas and the starting points of the route of the modernized PUVs. The routes will be to and from any point of Cagayan Valley.

“We expect that not all in the transport sector will immediately embrace this new program. We anticipate objections but we are hopeful that everyone will be enlightened on the vision of this program because our end goal is to provide transportation facilities that are safe, friendly and economical to the commuters, operators and also drivers,” Cabase said.

He also said that all modernized PUV will no longer be operated individually, instead the operators will already be organized for better transport system operations. (MDCT/OTB/PIA 2-Cagayan)
